Reducing wrinkles; facts and myths

Finally, it feels like we’re saying goodbye to winter! That usually means my clients start to think about summer and anti-wrinkle injections so this month I wanted to share a few facts and bust some myths.

MYTH

Anti-wrinkle injections can cause permanent damage to your face.

The action of the drug and protein binding to the nerve ending of the muscle can only be temporary!

FACT

There are currently 3 TGA approved brands available in Australia.

All 3 brands use the same drug, Botulinum Toxin Type A but manufacture it differently. The dosing units are not the same between brands which means 20 units of Botox is not the same as 20 units of Dysport. If your practitioner is not using one of these brands, it is not only unsafe but illegal.

MYTH

You’re putting poison in your face!

Botulinum toxin is derived from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. The toxin molecule is broken down to a purified strain (Type A), diluted and added to a protein carrier. Once this is injected into the muscle it reduces muscle contraction and prevents dynamic wrinkle formation. The action of the drug is localised and not systemic.

FACT;

Botulinum toxin has been used therapeutically since 1977.

It was initially used to treat eye and facial spasm. These patients were later noted to have reduced wrinkle development in the areas treated. It has since been used to treat contractures, migraines, neck dystonia, overactive bladder and excessive sweating. The Australian TGA approved Botulinum Toxin for cosmetic use in 1999.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.  Have a wonderful start to spring.

Sincerely Bec
